Sorry for this blurb but I just noticed Woman's Nation on MSNBC and that was the headline for the story. They seemed to be complaining that women were not portrayed in the working roles they have in real life.
So what the hell is?
People come home from their real life jobs and - (SURPRISE!!!) - don't actually want to watch someone doing what they've just been doing all day.
I was a computer guy during my career, I found it to be very interesting work and loved my job - but - how many people are going to want to tune in to prime time and watch me fix a computer? Some might ... once ... for some problem they weren't familiar with - but - (SURPRISE!!!) - the most common problems are - the most common problems! So about the sixth time they've seen me fix the same thing ... I think they're going to want to watch something else.
They said that among the top jobs portrayed on TV were women who were doctors and lawyers whereas in real life women were secretaries and school teachers.
TV:
"Tune in tonite and watch - Sydney Savage The Doctors Lawyer save her client from a Mal Practice suit. See Sydney repel down the side of a sky scraper, get the Secret Files and Convict the Real Culprit!!!"
Real Life:
"Little Johnny and Sweet Suzy both have to do a Number 2!! But she only has one hall pass! Which one will she give it to? Little Johnny's eyes are turning brown but Sweet Suzy is squirming uncontrollably in her little chair. Tune in tonight at 9:00 (7:00 Central) for the Drama of - Belinda Ballentine - 2nd Grade School Teacher!"
Oh and here's another thing ... I'll just bet another study (someone actually did a study on this ...) would show that people in real life don't look much like the actors in Hollywood. (Gasp!) Whadda ya wanna bet that ole Belinda has a few pounds on Sexy Sydney?
My Goodness! Where will the unrealistic portrayals of people by the television industry stop?
*eye roll*
Oh ... yeah ... and as long as I'm typing and it's on TV right now ... There's the commercial about the frazzeled house wife unloading grocery's from the hatch back of her economy car and complaining about the new tax on soft drinks ... Oh My Gawd!! They're gonna Tax my Caffine Free Diet Coke! What ever will I do!!!!
Now ... what makes me think that this commercial was ... not ... paid for by the Committee of Frazzeled House Wives For The Feeding of Carbonated Beverages To Their Children ..
Ahhhh ...
